I’ve been using my new Apple MacBook Air MC505LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop fairly constantly over the last two days since it arrived. How to I like it so far? I love it.It is slightly larger than my Asus eeePC 1000HA netbook, but more powerful and sleeker. It is razor thin (“careful you don’t cut yourself” thin), feather-light, and the keyboard is the same as on my 15″ MacBook Pro. Seriously, when it comes to design – it lives up to the marketing hype. If anything, the unit is TOO light. When I use it on my lap, it bounces a little but, but I’m working around that.
As for speed, the Air, with a 1.6GHz processor, boots and launches programs significantly faster than my 2008 MacBook Pro with a 2.4GHz processor, thanks largely to the 128GB of flash RAM storage. I did have to be choosey about what parts of my iTunes library I synced to the new machine, as I did not have enough space for everything. Incidentally, Apple’s Migration Assistant, when compared to the Windows File and Settings Transfer Wizard, is a dream.
I do miss the backlit keyboard, of my MacBook Pro, and an SD card slot would be nice, but I can function fine without those as well. I have not missed my DVD drive yet.
UPDATE: The inability to use a laptop lock with such a portable device seems a major omission. Then again, perhaps Steve is just really touting the “disposable” nature of technology these days.
